What’s Good

Jason Momoa shines with his sassy performance in this visually stunning film. It had the potential to surpass its predecessor.

What’s Bad

Unfortunately, some poorly edited scenes pull you out of the experience. The film gets mired in the Amber Heard vs. Johnny Depp drama.

Jason Momoa returns as the King of Atlantis, balancing his life as Arthur Curry and his responsibilities as a father. While he juggles changing diapers, danger brews deep in the ocean. The film sets the stage for an epic battle to restore the glory of the sea, as Arthur teams up with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson).

Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom Script Analysis

The film stumbles right from the start with a lackluster opening. You might want to stay hopeful, but the energy dips quickly. Weak jokes and forced humor distract from the main story. It seems like the writers were trying to emulate the success of the MCU’s Thor, but fell flat.

The plot feels muddled, making it hard to stay engaged. Despite the intriguing premise, the execution lacks clarity. The film introduces good vs. evil themes but fails to explore them deeply. Amber Heard’s Mera barely makes an impact, appearing almost randomly.

Star Performance

Jason Momoa clearly puts in the effort, bringing charm to his role. However, it’s not enough to save the film. If given the choice, I’d prefer him as Aquaman over Khal Drogo.

Amber Heard’s performance as Mera raises questions. She has a crucial scene but doesn’t deliver. Nicole Kidman’s role is minimal; she supports the narrative without stealing the spotlight. Patrick Wilson, as Orm, deserves a more developed character arc.

Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom: Momoa's Charm Can't Save Weak Story

Randall Park’s character, Dr. Stephen Shin, struggles with a poorly written role, yet he tries his best.

Direction and Music

James Wan’s direction seems to miss the mark here. While the film boasts impressive visual effects, they don’t compensate for the weak storytelling. Even the second half, which holds promise, fails to deliver a satisfying climax.

The music by Rupert Gregson-Williams could have enhanced the experience. Unfortunately, it often feels out of sync with the film’s tone.

The Last Word

This sequel could have revitalized the DCEU, but it falls short. The film feels like a missed opportunity. Amber Heard’s presence adds unnecessary complications, overshadowing the story’s potential.

While Jason Momoa is still a standout hero, this film doesn’t do justice to his character. It’s a disappointing chapter for Aquaman. Ultimately, the blame doesn’t rest solely on Amber Heard or the gossip surrounding her. The real issue lies in the film’s execution.
